We want each bottle to have plenty of time to infuse before we package them up and gift them out for Christmas. I’m with you on avoiding corn syrup. I chose the brown sugar for a more molasses-y taste.
I chose an organic dark brown sugar for its molasses flavor notes. If you’re using 190 proof grain alcohol, it doesn’t have to be refrigerated to keep, because, with an alcohol content of 20%, it inhibits microbial growth pretty darn well. If you are using any other kind of alcohol to make this, please keep it in the fridge. In fact, since you use kahlua cold in a lot of drinks, it’s a great place to store it. I used Wholesome brand dark brown organic sugar which added a rich molasses flavor. As you can see in the photo above, its texture is more coarse than refined.

A lot of it comes down to personal preference. When you think of Kahlúa, you probably also think of a creamy, dreamy mudslide. Spiked with both Baileys and Kahlúa, the mudslide is one of our favorite dessert cocktails, as it's essentially a boozy milkshake. You could run to the liquor store and pick up a bottle of Kahlúa and nobody will kick you out of the party. It’s plenty respectable as the number one coffee liqueur in the world with a provenance dating back to 1936 Veracruz, Mexico.
Can you drink kahlua straight?
Speaking of White Russians, they're not just The Dude's drink of choice. They're also one of the simplest cocktails of all and an endlessly riff-able favorite of Team Delish. Chances are, you've got all the components of a White Russian already in your pantry (Kahlúa, vodka, heavy cream). Once you've mastered the classic recipe, try your hand at our tiramisu White Russians and pumpkin spice White Russians. Beware this cocktail—it goes down easy, but these ingredients don’t mess around. Whether it’s summer or the dead of winter, this drink from Tessa Arias at Handle the Heat is like a day at the beach blended and poured for your enjoyment.
This recipe is simple but I am concerned that the brown sugar will give it an off taste. My recipe from a Hawaiian friend uses corn syrup and I am looking to replace that with a sugar only recipe. But why settle for mortality when you could drink like the gods, or at least one in Marvel’s universe. This playful recipe from The Drink Blog takes the basic structure of a White Russian but uses mead instead of vodka, much more fitting for a Norwegian thunder god. This spin on the White Russian from Simply Recipes is perfect for vegan and lactose-intolerant drinkers. Garrett McCord recommends a splash of ginger or cinnamon during the holidays to take your recipe to the next level.
Homemade Coffee Liqueur Recipe (AKA: Kahlúa)
We added both coffee and Kahlúa to a boxed cake mix for a true triple-threat. Top them off with a chocolate-covered espresso bean. Want to keep the party going strong? Try all our favorite classic cocktails every home bartender should know. We also taste-tested all the best tequilas, rums, whiskey, vodkas, and gins around to complete your home bar so you can keep on mixing. The recipe calls for ingredients easily found in the everyday kitchen and was especially created to complement the rich and velvety smooth taste of the world’s #1 coffee liqueur.
Traditionally Kahlúa is made exclusively with Arabica bean coffee. I made mine just short of espresso strength using a high-quality blend from Lavazza. To tell you the truth, I had never considered making this until one of you, dear readers, asked me about it recently. I was casting about for a homemade culinary treat like the ones I have shared over the years and it hit me as pure genius. I have done spices, candies, crackers, but never a liqueur.
Just think of the constant rollout at Starbucks and see how they have paired it. I list several here just to spur your creativity. Consider these inspo for cocktails, drizzles over ice cream, or savory dishes where you might want to add in a hit of Kahlúa.
They have gotten quiet pricey, so sub with a splash of real vanilla extract if you must. If you make this all in one big jug for the two weeks of curing, you might want to strain out the bean, if using, before bottling. But if you are going straight to the gift bottle as you make it, scrape all the seeds into the batch and cut the beans into enough pieces to put one piece in each bottle. Add in the vanilla and the grain alcohol. Pour into glass bottles, label, and store in a cool, dark place.
